Stair calculator
Enter the storey height from floor to floor. The calculator suggests a comfortable straight stair and checks it.
How the calculator works
The rise is the height of one step, the going its depth. Stairs are comfortable when two rises and one going add up to about one stride: 2 × rise + going = 59 to 65 cm (step rule), ideally about 63 cm.
The calculator divides the storey height into rises of about 17.5 cm and derives the going from the step rule. A straight flight has one going fewer than risers; that gives its length.
For residential buildings in Germany, DIN 18065 sets limits for rise and going; building regulations and the type of stair (winding stairs, for instance) can add requirements.
