Plan and furnish your apartment online for free

Last updated: 26 October 2026

To plan your apartment online, you first draw the floor plan in RoomPlanning with its real measurements, add doors and windows, and then place your furniture to scale. In the 3D view and on an eye-level walkthrough you see straight away whether the sofa fits and there is enough room to move. It all runs free in the browser, with nothing to install and no sign-up.

How to plan your apartment in RoomPlanning

  1. Get a floor plan or measure up. If you have a floor plan from the listing or the landlord, place it under your plan as a reference image and set the scale with two points a known distance apart (Drawings and export). Otherwise measure room by room: wall lengths, the position and width of doors and windows, sill heights, radiators and sockets.
  2. Draw the rooms. With the room tool you drag out a rectangle or type a size such as 400x300 (Rooms and areas). Angled walls, alcoves and bay windows are drawn as a polygon or as a chain of walls with exact lengths (Drawing walls). If you measured on the inside, set the wall’s reference line to the inner face.
  3. Add doors and windows. Watch the hinge side and the direction each door opens. Where a door leaf swings, no wardrobe can stand later (Doors and windows).
  4. Place your furniture. Find the matching piece in the catalog and enter the width, depth and height of your real furniture on the right (Furnishing). Start with the big items: bed, wardrobe, sofa, dining table. Radiators and sockets are in the catalog too, so you won’t block them.
  5. Check it in 3D. Press 3 to switch to the 3D view. With low walls you can see into every room at once. On a walkthrough you move through the apartment at eye level and open the doors.
  6. Agree on it with others. Send flatmates or family a link to the plan, or invite up to eight people to a walkthrough together (Sharing and templates). For moving day, print the plan as a PDF so every helper knows where each piece goes.

Rather not start from scratch? Open the City apartment, the Four-room family apartment or the Studio apartment straight in the editor and adapt it to your home.

Will the sofa fit? Check before you move

A piece of furniture not only has to fit in the room, it also has to get through the stairwell, the front door and the hallway. So measure the clear width of each door, meaning the free opening between the frames, not the door leaf. Standard interior doors often have only about 70 to 82 cm of clear width.

You usually carry a sofa through a door tilted or upright. Then its depth or height counts, not its length. The tight spots are corners in the hallway where you have to turn it, and the lift. Use the measuring tool (key M) to check such pinch points in the plan before the removal van arrives.

Rules of thumb for furnishing

These values are rules of thumb for comfortable living, not regulations. You’ll find more in the guide Furniture clearances and under Minimum room dimensions.

WhereRule of thumb
Beside the bed, on the side you get inabout 60 to 70 cm
In front of a wardrobe or chest of drawersabout 90 cm
Between sofa and coffee tableabout 30 to 50 cm
Dining table, width per personabout 60 cm
Table edge to wall, with chairs on that sideabout 80 to 100 cm
Walkway between furnitureat least about 70 cm

If you are renting, it pays to look at the floor area: the net area RoomPlanning shows for each room is the floor area inside the walls. The living area in a rental contract often follows its own rules, for example for sloping ceilings and balconies. The guide Calculating living area explains how it works, and you can check the numbers with the living area calculator.

Common mistakes

  • Guessing furniture sizes. A bed with its frame is wider and longer than the mattress, and a sofa with armrests is wider than you think. Enter the real measurements.
  • Overlooking doors, windows and radiators. A wardrobe in front of the radiator or a shelf in a door’s swing only shows up once it is standing there.
  • Thinking only in 2D. Whether the wardrobe fits under the sloping ceiling or the sofa is too high for the window sill, you see at once in 3D.
  • Blocking walkways. Each piece fits on its own, but together there is no way left to the window. Walk your everyday routes on the walkthrough.
  • Deciding everything at once. Try out variants. The version history brings back any earlier state.

Frequently asked questions

Can I plan my apartment online for free?

Yes. RoomPlanning is free and runs in the browser. Without an account your plan stays saved in that browser. If you create an account later, the plan moves with you and is available on every device.

How do I get the floor plan of my rented apartment into the planner?

Photograph or scan the floor plan and upload it as a reference image. Set the scale from a known length, such as a dimensioned wall, and trace the walls on top. Check one or two measurements with a tape measure, because listing floor plans are not always accurate.

How accurately do I need to measure?

To the centimetre is enough. Measure each wall in two places if you can, because older walls are rarely perfectly straight. More important than millimetres are the tight spots: alcoves, radiators, window sills and the clear width of the doors.

Can I look at the apartment together with others?

Yes. For plans in your account you invite up to eight people to a walkthrough by link. Your guests don’t need an account, they see each other as figures and can point out a spot to you. The link is valid for four hours.
